Gilbert 'Hernandez Loves Rockets' Celebrates 40 Years

Love and Rockets is known to many to be a groundbreaking series

In 2023, the title celebrates 40 years in the industry. The Hernandez Bros.' title began as a self-published punk zine before evolving into the well-known series it is today.

The series, which is a mix of science fiction, magical realism, and autobiography, has been praised for its complex characters and innovative storytelling.

Gilbert Hernandez, one of the three Hernandez brothers who created Love and Rockets, is especially known for his sophisticated, psychologically rich, and political charged "Palomar" stories.

From humble beginnings to mainstream success

The series has been translated into more than 20 languages and has won numerous awards, including the Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series.

Hernandez himself has been recognized with several prestigious awards for his work on Love and Rockets, including the Inkpot Award and induction into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame.

Fantagraphics has been the publisher of Love and Rockets since 1982.

Fantagraphics celebrated Love and Rockets' 40th anniversary with a special hardcover collection of the series' first 50 issues.

The collection is titled Love and Rockets: The First 50 Issues and includes an introduction by Gilbert Hernandez.

"The stories in Love and Rockets are as relevant today as they were when they were first published," said Fantagraphics publisher Gary Groth.

"They're a powerful reminder of the power of comics and the importance of independent voices."

The characters of Love and Rockets are unforgettable

The series features a cast of memorable characters, including Maggie Chascarrillo, Hopey Glass, and Luba.

Maggie is a strong and independent woman who is struggling to find her place in the world.

Luba is a brilliant scientist who is grappling with her own personal demons.

"Love and Rockets is a truly unique and groundbreaking series," said comics historian R.C. Harvey.

"It's a must-read for anyone who is interested in the history of comics or in great storytelling."
