1988-1989 Boston Celtics Season
Third Time's a Charm for the Celtics
Boston finishes third in NBA's Atlantic Division
The 1988-1989 season marked the 43rd campaign for the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association (NBA). After finishing fifth in the Atlantic Division the previous season, the Celtics improved their record to 42-40, good for third place in the division.
Led by Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish, the Celtics boasted a talented roster that included Reggie Lewis, Dennis Johnson, and Brian Shaw. Bird, a 10-time NBA All-Star and three-time NBA MVP, once again led the team in scoring, averaging 24.3 points per game.
The Celtics faced a challenging schedule during the regular season, facing off against some of the league's top teams. Notable wins included a 118-116 victory over the reigning NBA champion Detroit Pistons and a 123-104 triumph over the Los Angeles Lakers.
Despite their strong regular season performance, the Celtics were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the New York Knicks. The Knicks, who went on to win the NBA championship that year, proved too tough for the Celtics, winning the series in four games.
The 1988-1989 season was a successful one for the Celtics, as they returned to the playoffs after a one-year absence. The team's third-place finish in the Atlantic Division was a testament to their hard work and dedication, and the experience gained during the season would prove invaluable in the years to come.
